The National Portrait Gallery

If anyone is in London and has a chance to wander into a FREE exhibition I would heartily recommend The Indian Portrait 1560-1860 at the National Portrait Gallery, which is on show until 20th June.

Contemporary Connections: The Singh Twins is also a very inspiring exhibition of beautiful paintings in the style of Indian Portraits but with a modern twist. The quality of these works is exquisite... it is hard to imagine how they manage to paint such tiny and precise details.

Things that I love...

I'm going to start blogging about the things made by other crafty type people that I think are brilliant for (hopefully) obvious reasons!

My first favourite is pretty much anything contained within the etsy shop Kit Lane. The descriptions are engaging, imaginative and witty and the photos of her creations are too!

I ordered some custom creatures for two friends at Christmas from Kit Lane and I now think that everyone should own a Jacabunny, Snarfle and Jacabob. Well generally any type of Bobaloo or Oddject really!

I had a go at making my own needle felted creation and it is hard work but also a most magical experience!

Alice in Wonderland Inspiration...

I just came across a wonderful little shop on etsy. This amazing necklace is just one of the beautiful items for sale!

Take a look at Karolin Felix's beautiful and unusual jewellery here.

It was good timing to find this shop because I've been designing more lace jewellery after being inspired by Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland film and locating a wonderful shop called V V Rouleaux where you can have your own ribbons designed! Most exciting!!! Expect a Wonderland collection very soon!

I loved Alice in Wonderland and recently went to see the fab top hats designed by Coleen Atwood for the film at Wonderland at Selfridges

Continuing the top hat theme, there are some beautifully chic and very affordable vintage style Alice goodies such as this wonderful Mad Hatter necklace below at Niche Handmade on folksy here

and for even more Alice inspiration check out polyvore.com.

New Year, New Business Cards!

I have just received my new Jewellery Designs by Sarah Birt business cards this morning through the post! They have a picture of a little castle on them!!!

I ordered them from Happy Girl Greetings, a lovely little shop on etsy using gorgeous images from old encyclopedias to create a really great vintage look to your stationery.

My First Brooch

This is my first ever brooch! It is a little dancing fox measuring 4 cm. I wasn't sure whether to offer brooches but I got a commission from my etsy shop and thought I'd try it out.

The Staffordshire Hoard

I went to see the Staffordshire hoard on Sunday. There were 80 pieces exhibited at the Potteries Museum in Stoke out of 1600 found in a field in South Staffordshire last year. We waited for 3 and a half hours but it was worth it to see such beautiful and exquisite metal work. No-one really knows why the hoard was buried but my guess is that the pieces (all embellishments for military attire) were stolen from a battlefield with the theif(ves) hoping to come back to collect them at a later date. Strange that they were abandoned for so long but it is wonderful to see them now!

My favourite piece was a little gold horse that was really tiny but beautifully detailed. Many of the other pieces were set with deep red garnets and still had the soil from the field on them until they can be properly cleaned and conserved.

I am glad that it has been confirmed that they will stay in the midlands and I can't wait to see the whole collection! If you can, it is well worth going to see the collection that will 'redefine the dark ages' :D
