<span style="text-align: start;">I recently visited the beautiful village of St Agnes on the north-west coast of Cornwall and found myself endlessly inspired by the coastal views and in particular, the abandoned tin mines, which signify Cornwall's rich mining heritage.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've been reading the Poldark books by Winston Graham since the first episode of the new tv series aired in March on the BBC. That series was based on the books Ross Poldark (book 1) and Demelza (book 2). When in Cornwall I finished the twelfth book of the series. They are beautifully written, thoroughly engaging and full of those often heartbreaking moments of cause and consequence where seemingly unrelated events have diabolical consequences for the title characters, their friends and neighbours. There are also some excellent baddies namely George Warleggan and Osborne Whitworth and I have almost missed my tube stop more than once because I was so engrossed with their general chicanery and misdeeds! The Cornish landscape is described in great detail by Winston Graham and it is easy to see why he was inspired by the scenery.</div>

I bought a planishing hammer, which has a rounded and perfectly flat end. This is a lightweight version, traditionally used for forming and flattening metal. You can create some interesting effects on the surface of the silver.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8AZWUsjtD-sVk2D87ZXYcgnyWDeS_oNjgNmcLDH37qLyPFDueZRbV86KZB3cSSIT3Q-cAH-02_q2TAtMTfGGdYeJv6Fhfoy-9GKoeDBnB34c1FFv0TSDpbF0DMn9Ct53cYJ49GJJ1rrZy/s1600/SAM_7060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="638" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8AZWUsjtD-sVk2D87ZXYcgnyWDeS_oNjgNmcLDH37qLyPFDueZRbV86KZB3cSSIT3Q-cAH-02_q2TAtMTfGGdYeJv6Fhfoy-9GKoeDBnB34c1FFv0TSDpbF0DMn9Ct53cYJ49GJJ1rrZy/s640/SAM_7060.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This 2.5 mm sterling silver round wire is tough to form with pliers. I had to anneal it a couple of times, heating it with the torch to bring it to a dull red colour. After soldering the wire shut, I was then able to round it on the ring mandrel using my new rawhide mallet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxvbzDCyWqUZ7z08oljVnFH-73-WC3I5MWSF446rvFWQISXniC0-O15qDZdECy9kL4YHRVubYv2cRHnpp95zONhIVpstEihp94nFcDDFWsWQRUY3R57KyU3ZEFEQmxDzZYJ8EHROl4Stye/s1600/SAM_7063.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxvbzDCyWqUZ7z08oljVnFH-73-WC3I5MWSF446rvFWQISXniC0-O15qDZdECy9kL4YHRVubYv2cRHnpp95zONhIVpstEihp94nFcDDFWsWQRUY3R57KyU3ZEFEQmxDzZYJ8EHROl4Stye/s640/SAM_7063.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Keeping the ring flat on a steel bench block, I began to flatten the wire using a steady pressure.<br />

This is about halfway finished. I am going to anneal the ring again and see if I can flatten it further.<br />

<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">The Film</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I went to see Far from the Madding Crowd yesterday and felt inspired to blog about my thoughts on it. I absolutely love movies. I have a fairly diverse taste (for instance, the last film I went to see before this was Age of Ultron) but I do particularly love period dramas. They are good for me personally as a jewellery designer/maker, providing inspiration and quite often a background for when I am performing the slightly tedious and time-consuming task of polishing silver by hand. I quite often have a film on in the background and dip in and out of series like Pride and Prejudice when I am pottering about, working from home. Far from the Madding Crowd, I can guarantee, will be part of my dvd collection. I love the story anyway but this interpretation on film is, I think, a worthy take on the source material.</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There are a few deviations from the book and at times I felt I might have done things slightly differently but overall I was particularly impressed by both the casting/performances and the look of the film. </span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">It seems that we are all viewing historic rural landscapes through a rosy lens nowadays. From the BBC's latest adaptation of <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02jslnf" target="_blank">Poldark</a> in particular, with its glowing sunsets, rolling waves and silhouetted figures riding across the horizon to Alan Rickman's A Little Chaos, which has a particularly striking scene showing a procession delivery of a tree! Incidentally, this scene is about 10 seconds in on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENSjt4naxlE" target="_blank">trailer</a>. I have no problem with this. I work in an art gallery so I am very much preoccupied with the visual and Far from the Madding Crowd is undoubtedly gorgeous. The scene where Bathsheba meets Sergeant Troy in the forest is dreamlike and reminiscent of animations such as <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyX89c3nSHw" target="_blank">Princess Mononoke</a> and <a href="http://www.npr.org/2015/03/28/395328714/the-chinese-paper-son-who-inspired-the-look-of-disneys-bambi" target="_blank">Bambi</a>.</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/5-_9AFwMDmQ/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5-_9AFwMDmQ?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">In terms of casting and performances, I was struck by how much Carey Mulligan seems to have matured as an actress. The director, Thomas Vinterberg often lingers on the actors allowing them to relay their character's inner feelings and Mulligan is absolutely wonderful at conveying Bathsheba's independent spirit and her horror at how her life is spiralling out of her control, both as a result of a thoughtless act with a Valentine's card and in her relationship with Sergeant Troy. I think that she comes across as an actor that really respects and knows her craft. </span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">When I heard that Michael Sheen was going to be cast as Boldwood I was convinced that he would be perfect and I wasn't disappointed. He does an excellent job and there is a powerful moment when he confesses to Gabriel about his devastation, his "grief", never to be relayed to Bathsheba following her marriage to Troy. This brief glimpse at his utter unravelling really does let you know that this can never end well for him. Matthias Schoenearts is suitably quiet and steady as </span><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Gabriel Oak although I still remember Nathaniel Parker's more evident warmth in this role. Gabriel Oak (a most fantastic character name) may not be as moody as Ross Poldark or have such beautiful grounds compared to Fitzwilliam Darcy but his unfailing support and unconditional love are surely worth prizing in a romantic hero.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I believe in libraries but I do also own a fair few books. They are usually second hand because I love the sense of uniqueness particularly if the pages are edged in gold! My copy of Far from the Madding Crowd was purchased last year from a second hand book shop called <a href="http://www.librarything.com/venue/77335/Ian-K-Pugh-Books" target="_blank"><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">Ian K </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 20px;">Pugh Books</span></a><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 20px;"> at </span><span jstcache="318" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;">40 Bridge St, </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; line-height: 18px;">Pershore, WR10 1AT. The inscription inside reads Sylvia Barrett 30/1/28 and this edition was published in 1925. </span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">There are a few parts of the book that really struck me when I first read them. I know Thomas Hardy is sometimes considered to be slightly depressing but the sheer quality of his writing is worth any apparent gloominess as long as you can try to get over the absolute tragedy of Fanny Robin's end.</span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The ways that the film slightly differed from the book made me consider the plot more closely. Firstly, in the book, Bathsheba saves Gabriel from his shepherd's hut after he closes the vents to keep out a particularly bitter wind and nearly suffocates. I wonder whether by denying Bathsheba her moment of heroism it detracts from the intensity of their initial encounters. Gabriel says "I believe you saved my life" and earlier "How can I thank ye?" Whilst he is obviously immediately attracted to Bathsheba even before this incident, I felt that by leaving this scene out, some of the nuance of obligation and initial intimacy between the pair was lost.</span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">I would imagine that time constraints and a sense of the potential opportunity for heightened tragedy later on in the film led to the omission of the scene after Sergeant Troy and Fanny Robin's failed marriage. When he meets Fanny on the street and she begs him to forgive her for mistaking the location of the church, the sense of Troy's humiliation and immaturity shine through. I would have included this moment as an aid to the development of each character although there is a great moment in the film where Bathsheba observes Troy chasing geese. You know it is not a meeting of minds!</span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Whilst on the subject of characterisation, Liddy is given a decent enough amount of screen time but the other farm folk are kept as more of a backdrop. Their personalities could have injected more warmth and humour and a greater contrast between the experience of the rich and poor but I imagine this is sacrificed to highlight the romance of the story.</span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The other moment between Gabriel and Bathsheba that was altered was her final visit to his house (it is relocated outdoors). In the book, the contrast between living situations and the glimpse at farmer Oak's meagre but practical possessions, illustrates the strength and longevity of Gabriel's feelings towards Bathsheba. He is willing to live humbly in order to support her.</span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The shift in the balance of power towards a more equal and mutual understanding is also encapsulated in the following exchange, which is omitted from the film:</span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 28px; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #741b47;">"...Why Gabriel," she said, with a slight laugh, as they went to the door, "it seems exactly as if I had come courting you - how dreadful!"</span></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #741b47; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="line-height: 28px; text-align: left;"><br /></span></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #741b47; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="line-height: 28px; text-align: left;">"And quite right too," said Oak. "I've danced at your skittish heels, my beautiful Bathsheba, for many a long mile, and many a long day; and it is hard to begrudge me this one visit."</span></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 28px; text-align: left;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; line-height: 28px; text-align: left;">For me, one of the most important summaries of the relationship is this:</span></div>

interstices of a mass of hard prosaic reality. This
good-fellowship—camaraderie—usually occurring through similarity of pursuits,
is unfortunately seldom superadded to love between the sexes, because men and
women associate, not in their labours, but in their pleasures merely. Where,
however, happy circumstance permits its development, the compounded feeling
proves itself to be the only love which is strong as death—that love which many
waters cannot quench, nor the floods drown, beside which the passion usually
called by the name is evanescent as steam.”</span></span><!--EndFragment-->

Bathsheba has been tamed by heartbreak and misfortune and you have to wonder whether we are meant to think that she deserved this. Her self-assurance at the beginning of her journey is unmade and then restored to a lesser extent by her life experience. Her one true act of folly, in the form of a Valentine to Boldwood (which allows Gabriel to berate her with a certain sense of satisfaction) leads to a rather unfair punishment as Boldwood's obsession becomes overwhelmingly oppressive and ultimately dangerous.</span></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For me, the ultimate success of Gabriel Oak's suit is when the reader moves away from any notions of an ideal relationship (a confirmed happily ever after) and begins to understand that this is more of a partnership for survival with love cemented by constancy and shared ideals. I'm not trying to take the romance out of it but it is a more mature and steady relationship and stronger for it.</span></span></div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I often notice the costumes in films and my jewellery has been inspired by the colours and styles of historic costumes in films including Elizabeth The Golden Age and Belle. The costumes in Far from the Madding Crowd were designed by Jane Patterson. She won a BAFTA for The Piano and has been nominated for an oscar four times for The Piano, The Portrait of a Lady, Oscar and Lucinda and Bright Star.</span></div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">What I noticed particularly with Carey Mulligan's costumes for her role as Bathsheba was how strikingly modern she looked. The patterns were not at all dissimilar to the Jacobean and paisley patterns that have been very popular on the high street in recent years. Also, one of her dresses appeared to be made from denim. I liked this use of costumes to give a modern sense to the character. I'd be quite happy to wear some of her dresses myself! The movie still below shows not only the harmonious use of colour in the film but also demonstrates some of the design elements that I am referring to.</span></div>

I don't know how much people really think or care about how jewellery is made when they buy either from me or from other small-scale designer-makers but sometimes the process is just as interesting as the finished product.<br />
<br />
I don't have a huge budget for new tools but it was my birthday recently so I felt like I could treat myself to something new. I have opted for this rawhide mallet to replace my nylon mallet, which is still usable but has a slight problem because the head always chips so that I get left with tiny crumbs of plastic when I form silver into rings and bangles.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4ycEtNU0EOMZS20Llk4V6967mRwSaGFIFjrOmr4LFCuBD9F3HAwjN3Jvv-Zy5VrIPCZ_6mFm-NmFtFmC9gTNMdl0cSOGEitFq2ak42_tWOxG08d-L5BvR4HQejrqsyq0up6wrevMxn1yA/s1600/SAM_7021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4ycEtNU0EOMZS20Llk4V6967mRwSaGFIFjrOmr4LFCuBD9F3HAwjN3Jvv-Zy5VrIPCZ_6mFm-NmFtFmC9gTNMdl0cSOGEitFq2ak42_tWOxG08d-L5BvR4HQejrqsyq0up6wrevMxn1yA/s640/SAM_7021.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The mallet is made from a spiral of buffalo leather. I must admit, I've had the theme from Rawhide in my head ever since I ordered it and when it arrived, I was quite delighted to see that it was a Thor branded hammer. My very own <span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Mj<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">ö</span>lnir!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuBKy2rmsVsAN_dTAKj_sI7UHPrLhiM86ppjWKPtE3J0odLcjUS0S8wUJ3w4GgYBobd2MYYEgixc4xvUiNZzs3ZTP8IcOJ1e8JPfUdjAxYCpl9ywuWRTWVKennM-jCPPycYOfkfr8rIMZ1/s1600/SAM_7023.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuBKy2rmsVsAN_dTAKj_sI7UHPrLhiM86ppjWKPtE3J0odLcjUS0S8wUJ3w4GgYBobd2MYYEgixc4xvUiNZzs3ZTP8IcOJ1e8JPfUdjAxYCpl9ywuWRTWVKennM-jCPPycYOfkfr8rIMZ1/s640/SAM_7023.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I chose the Size 1 mallet with a 1 1/4 inch head diameter. It's a nice size and quite lightweight. My jewellery is often small and delicate so I don't think I'd really need anything bigger. I haven't used it yet but I'm very pleased that I decided to upgrade my tools. I feel more official as a silversmith!<br />
<br />
Plus it's always nice to have a new toy particularly if I can pretend I'm a superhero by lifting it!Jewellery Designs by Sarah Birthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09696255515960591300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4696018272668366834.post-84745571297696622442015-03-16T10:58:00.000-07:002015-03-16T10:58:13.977-07:00Collecting: Vintage Shoe Last<div style="background-color: white; http: //fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Calligraffitti'/; line-height: 1.3em; padding-left: 18px; text-align: justify; width: 652px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">There was once a shoemaker, who worked very hard and was very honest: but still he could not earn enough to live upon; and at last all he had in the world was gone, save just leather enough to make one pair of shoes.</span></i></div>
</div>
<div class="firstParagraph" style="background-color: white; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.3em; padding-left: 18px; text-align: justify; width: 652px;">
<i><span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Calligraffitti'/; font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.3em; padding-left: 18px; text-align: justify; width: 652px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i><span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Then he cut his leather out, all ready to make up the next day, meaning to rise early in the morning to his work. His conscience was clear and his heart light amidst all his troubles; so he went peaceably to bed, left all his cares to Heaven, and soon fell asleep. In the morning after he had said his prayers, he sat himself down to his work; when, to his great wonder, there stood the shoes all ready made, upon the table. The good man knew not what to say or think at such an odd thing happening. He looked at the workmanship; there was not one false stitch in the whole job; all was so neat and true, that it was quite a masterpiece.</span></i></div>
<i><span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></i>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The excerpt above is from the well known tale 'The Elves and the Shoemaker' by the Brothers Grimm. It struck me that many of us are guilty of buying shoes, which appear in the shops as if by magic without thinking of the work that goes in to make them! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I bought this wooden shoe last (from <span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">‘laest’, meaning footprint </span></span><span style="color: #222222; line-height: 18px;">in Old English</span><span style="color: #222222;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">) </span></span>yesterday from a vintage and antiques fair in Ludlow. It was in a box of assorted random objects but as I walked up to the stall I was immediately taken with it and knew I would buy it. The wood is worn and well-used with an attractive leaf stamp design, probably signifying that it belonged to a particular maker. The shoe last itself is hinged so that it folds in half and there is a removable wooden peg. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The last was used to measure out leather and it would have been sewn historically by women. The photographs below give an idea of how the leather would have been moulded around the wooden last. The hinge allowed shoemakers to remove the last from the leather.</span><br />

I thought I would share how I recycle the scrap silver left when I cut out my designs by making it into sterling silver studs.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">For this, you need a charcoal block, which encourages the sterling silver to collect into a molten ball when it is heated. </span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkfO5U0qVhoRq65s13ZAqkUANMQY6tToiPshePrJwxlyN8y8jw2OwM_6WH8uU5TyQifCs3emfDQnZYZEt9LEg7g5hHgqCWydn_92vKzz0QK67zUSnWsQvlWM6r4eDaUIbme-L2rVOsPpYD/s1600/SAM_1871.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkfO5U0qVhoRq65s13ZAqkUANMQY6tToiPshePrJwxlyN8y8jw2OwM_6WH8uU5TyQifCs3emfDQnZYZEt9LEg7g5hHgqCWydn_92vKzz0QK67zUSnWsQvlWM6r4eDaUIbme-L2rVOsPpYD/s1600/SAM_1871.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This scrap of silver is the middle between two cut out squirrels! </span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGp06obaEX0r1cpKkUZSfr0U1GcW2lGTpytqt8VW_NpAkWv8c9pt820_28sxTbAYKEcijsyTBu0PdsYbesEvPon22dyTTf2hdhxANDlPiGBVVTUolJXCqZdamglV7tLapl7ahOJ4rUINAC/s1600/SAM_1873.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGp06obaEX0r1cpKkUZSfr0U1GcW2lGTpytqt8VW_NpAkWv8c9pt820_28sxTbAYKEcijsyTBu0PdsYbesEvPon22dyTTf2hdhxANDlPiGBVVTUolJXCqZdamglV7tLapl7ahOJ4rUINAC/s1600/SAM_1873.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">When heated with a torch, the silver starts to melt and draws together, you can see the ball shape starting to form.</span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxb8TnyGWLcUyXd7Qil7iUXEWTkrDxDolGHvNhaO4BzrZ8dZrRnxei7lI1cm00K0RHlT9feTnOWVSc42FRLITKJemtadax1RfdbTOZ6naOwbvFl-WIfex7O4kKgt1clgZgmDFYZG0IWZmU/s1600/SAM_1877.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxb8TnyGWLcUyXd7Qil7iUXEWTkrDxDolGHvNhaO4BzrZ8dZrRnxei7lI1cm00K0RHlT9feTnOWVSc42FRLITKJemtadax1RfdbTOZ6naOwbvFl-WIfex7O4kKgt1clgZgmDFYZG0IWZmU/s1600/SAM_1877.JPG" height="398" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Suddenly the ball shape is formed.</span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTe1f467eB9cVGWA68siuClA6MGcLWkpff8tyqVRZZsQH7rIH01SRTePSEsxNHxSFm4IxDQPs8wcjgHhqxxvEDavmNhgUC2NEfvDa-uWMEIJWeeA31P5XNA28L0R7Il-bbMDdmWH16Vmg8/s1600/SAM_1879.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTe1f467eB9cVGWA68siuClA6MGcLWkpff8tyqVRZZsQH7rIH01SRTePSEsxNHxSFm4IxDQPs8wcjgHhqxxvEDavmNhgUC2NEfvDa-uWMEIJWeeA31P5XNA28L0R7Il-bbMDdmWH16Vmg8/s1600/SAM_1879.JPG" height="400" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">It takes quite some time for the metal to cool.</span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

I had a tiny length of cast silver twig left from a previous project and I was wondering what on earth I could do with it. It occurred to me that it might make a good broom handle. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSImkQyGjExXYGxyaHwTsr41O4R5SjHmbkpzy2nQoCInfhLUG0eUWzZ9vEzx2MnS6BWLyTJ_J6uAUoYNBslmMyTJ4qVfRR2cBoitqHMlcir6w7zSKLuYrcjyZHKQGnj9VvcsQPqItjhVsm/s1600/SAM_1439.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSImkQyGjExXYGxyaHwTsr41O4R5SjHmbkpzy2nQoCInfhLUG0eUWzZ9vEzx2MnS6BWLyTJ_J6uAUoYNBslmMyTJ4qVfRR2cBoitqHMlcir6w7zSKLuYrcjyZHKQGnj9VvcsQPqItjhVsm/s1600/SAM_1439.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I inherited some embroidery threads that were owned by my great grandmother (she had a seriously impressive array of colours in an old biscuit tin) so I soldered a small jump ring to one end of the twig and created a mulberry coloured silk tassel, tying it with a contrasting amber brown colour. </div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 18px;">The idea of combining distinctive fabric ribbons with precious charms was in part inspired by the tradition of foundling tokens, which form part of <a href="http://www.foundlingmuseum.org.uk/collections/the-foundling-hospital-collection/" target="_blank">The Foundling Museum Collection</a> in London. Parents that were unable to care for their children and had to place them at the Foundling Hospital would leave swatches of fabric from their clothing or a silver charm or even a coin for the child to remember them by. It's a very moving place to visit and indicates how precious simple items such as a ribbon can be. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; line-height: 18px;">The sari ribbon used for the bracelets is Fair trade and made in India from silk waste (sari material offcuts), which would otherwise be sent to landfill sites. The ribbons are purchased from women's co-operatives in India allowing the women to work from home and earn their own income from their craft.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 18px;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 18px;">The bracelet can be worn in different ways making a feature bow worn on the wrist or a double knot tucked underneath the rest of the fabric. I will be making several variations over the next few weeks.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">A range of my jewellery inspired by the Tudor and Jacobean portraits in the National Portrait Gallery, London will be on sale from Monday in their new pop-up shop on the second floor.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">You can see the build of the shop in progress below:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYnsW_Oqlhd1Ii5ixzT5A1HXUvzMUrj33p5ssoN3zcSgCG9SER17fXetJKD9LoTEAJNQqXPo4OIfo4_X5-1jJo_B_BJf2AI2uXOxERSRwoDrk8srT4-N_I7L1zqgsuPD9sfvNPOLE2H_nZ/s1600/SAM_0561.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYnsW_Oqlhd1Ii5ixzT5A1HXUvzMUrj33p5ssoN3zcSgCG9SER17fXetJKD9LoTEAJNQqXPo4OIfo4_X5-1jJo_B_BJf2AI2uXOxERSRwoDrk8srT4-N_I7L1zqgsuPD9sfvNPOLE2H_nZ/s1600/SAM_0561.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The shop accompanies an exciting new exhibition entitled <a href="http://www.npg.org.uk/whatson/display/2014/the-real-tudors-kings-and-queens-rediscovered.php" target="_blank">The Real Tudors: Kings and Queens Rediscovered</a>, which opens tomorrow (Friday, 12th September).</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The paintings on display juxtapose portraits of famous Tudor Kings and Queens alongside some of the objects that they most treasured in life. Examples of such objects include Henry VIII's rosary, a page from Edward VI's diary in which he reports his father's death and Elizabeth I's locket ring, which contains a miniature portrait traditionally thought to depict her mother, Anne Boleyn.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Best of all, this display is completely free!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Taking note of the highly decorative detailing on the historic costumes depicted in the portraits of Elizabeth I, I designed an entirely new range of jewellery to celebrate the fascinating styles of dress in sixteenth-century Britain.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Happily my vase did not crack in the kiln! It has been fired to 1000<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 18px;">°C</span></span><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">. This is called biscuit firing and is a two part process, leaving the clay porous and ready to accept the glaze.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I tested the process of dipping clay into glaze using my test piece. The green glaze will have a pink hue when it is fired. The white patch will have a natural clay colour with white speckles.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">For the inside of my vase, I poured a blue green glaze into the vase and swirled it around inside quickly. It is essential not to let the glaze get too thick.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBrM6pt60EoLm_vsHqMZ_c9yyJeNCTDLE2uMu4Km0avBzm8lyG6Z6M7-5qsBXRJNf3MSqG3yJOynakboF7I3lrewBU7ykRQoiWoUbL-J-uvn0dehS1GKAoWXxwqq4jJJoT0k07tWnS5BMi/s1600/SAM_9958.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBrM6pt60EoLm_vsHqMZ_c9yyJeNCTDLE2uMu4Km0avBzm8lyG6Z6M7-5qsBXRJNf3MSqG3yJOynakboF7I3lrewBU7ykRQoiWoUbL-J-uvn0dehS1GKAoWXxwqq4jJJoT0k07tWnS5BMi/s1600/SAM_9958.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I then dipped the vase upside down (bunny first) into a white glaze, which was pretty thick. This was just one dip.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I tried sponging on the blue green glaze near the base of the vase for extra detail. It is ready to be fired again. I get to collect it on Monday. Hopefully it will survive the second firing process!!!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">After soldering, pieces can often look completely hopeless. Sometimes I think I've completely destroyed something until I've pickled (cleaned in a weak acid) and polished it. Below you can see that Elizabeth looks quite mucky and not particularly regal!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS-HcKvn_Qr-fZPuxT8BQ400bdC-cBESK_EUGpIW7aTLD-hCzN1lLe-Ma3iacIgLjzQNXuOBzeHvwra3etADqhsvGrQgsc8c_hklBptqDysy9RY6oosxtWcoyUtMaPl_gcxbVSMWqzUn_G/s1600/SAM_9938.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS-HcKvn_Qr-fZPuxT8BQ400bdC-cBESK_EUGpIW7aTLD-hCzN1lLe-Ma3iacIgLjzQNXuOBzeHvwra3etADqhsvGrQgsc8c_hklBptqDysy9RY6oosxtWcoyUtMaPl_gcxbVSMWqzUn_G/s1600/SAM_9938.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">After a lot of elbow grease and polishing with sandpapers of various grades, the design becomes clearer and the brooch starts to looks much more wearable. Although the brooch in the photo below has clearly been polished a lot, it still needs a lot of work. I use 240 grade emery paper to take away any fire stains and then work down to finer grades of paper such as 1000 and sometimes even 2000 to get that high shine. It takes a lot of time but at least you can do this whilst watching a film! In fact, sometimes I find that I associate pieces forever with what I've watched whilst polishing them! Today it was The Simpsons. Perhaps I should have watched something a little more historical?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtVPktjov_X_u9A6JFrkbEQOjuBh-nmYNpRP7wyv1ddh6caLFjUMf8X1T_cS0kpyDlISAsa56eh0ZUuLH3vX6rbuTxHRha3eZV4g7lGND8awIc0KqPN7qqAYS4TfglfoAs24nkBM2g9sHq/s1600/SAM_9940.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtVPktjov_X_u9A6JFrkbEQOjuBh-nmYNpRP7wyv1ddh6caLFjUMf8X1T_cS0kpyDlISAsa56eh0ZUuLH3vX6rbuTxHRha3eZV4g7lGND8awIc0KqPN7qqAYS4TfglfoAs24nkBM2g9sHq/s1600/SAM_9940.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Finally, this is the finished brooch (below). It has been polished to a very high shine. The detailing is clear and I'm pretty pleased with the result! I would like to see if I could make a smaller version to have as earrings and perhaps as cufflinks or a pendant? This is a basic version and I could set gemstones and make more elaborate ruffs as well, which might be fun!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Queen Elizabeth I was very aware of how important her image was to her subjects and to the rest of the world. She cultivated her appearance as the Virgin Queen by applying make up and wearing elaborate wigs and gowns. She famously never married, choosing to retain sole power as Queen of England.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Inspired by surviving portraits of Elizabeth I, I decided to see if I could recreate her image in copper and silver. The portrait below was a particular inspiration. It dates from c. 1588 and commemorates the defeat of the Spanish Armada. It part of the National Portrait Gallery's <a href="http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw02077/Queen-Elizabeth-I?LinkID=mp01452&search=sas&sText=elizabeth+I&role=sit&rNo=8" target="_blank">collection</a> although it is rarely on display.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFet9enNG7Nsr_0qYv5JhEjs7ARGpxZ2kQ8rqWAcMFLAezdT9-2GGpZ0s7r_hgxStznWVOA-OK9UKfBcPQHEy2ewqTQM2yme0gO-LlWJDh1DmYuAFfW2Qvv_9fmzeFv-gcW8xoyUr_yXWY/s1600/mw02077.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFet9enNG7Nsr_0qYv5JhEjs7ARGpxZ2kQ8rqWAcMFLAezdT9-2GGpZ0s7r_hgxStznWVOA-OK9UKfBcPQHEy2ewqTQM2yme0gO-LlWJDh1DmYuAFfW2Qvv_9fmzeFv-gcW8xoyUr_yXWY/s1600/mw02077.jpg" height="400" width="315" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15px; text-align: start;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">© National Portrait Gallery, London</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15px; text-align: start;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 15px; text-align: start;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">First, I had to pare down the design to make it easier to pierce from silver sheet. I drew my design onto the sheet and drilled tiny holes where the eyes, eyebrows and mouth were going to be. The next stage was to pass a saw blade through the holes and sketch out the design by cutting into the metal. This is incredibly fiddly and you need an exceptionally steady hand! There is an added sense of fear because if you make a mistake, you cannot rectify it and you have to start again. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Next, I needed to cut out a heart shaped piece of copper for the hair. I wanted it to cover the detail in the face and to strengthen the design so it had to be big enough to fit neatly behind the ruff.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The fear of filling the pierced design with solder is very real and so I've found the best way to achieve good results is to use very tiny pieces of solder positioned very carefully. I then laid the silver Elizabeth onto the copper sheet and moved the flame continuously whilst checking to see if the two metals were fixed together.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I recently visited the <a href="http://www.museetoulouselautrec.net/the-palais-de-la-berbie-and-its-gardens.html" target="_blank">Toulouse-Lautrec Museum</a> in Albi, France. It is a spectacular art gallery, situated in the Palais de la Berbie, a former residence for the medieval Bishops of Albi with exquisite gardens and a definitive collection of Toulouse-Lautrec's work including his posters, very early paintings and even the litho stones, which were used to create his lithographic prints.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Here are some of my holiday snaps, which I hope capture the beauty of Albi.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The image below on the left hand side shows Toulouse-Lautrec's only foray into ceramics and it is a portrait of the cabaret singer and actress Yvette Guilbert. It can be compared with the photograph on the right hand side.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Lautrec has depicted Guilbert's trademark silhouetted gloves and has pared down his use of colour indicating the influence of Japanese <i>ukiyo-e</i> prints on his work. Yvette Guilbert was not entirely enamoured with her likeness. She preferred more flattering portraits but Lautrec captured her character in just a few lines through the tilt of her head as she receives the adulation of the audience and the drama of the stage, allowing the spectator a close-up of this famous star. I have to say, I really admire his work.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Here is a clip of Guilbert singing. I think it really brings the portraits to life.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/cpE7OtytfaU?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I loved Toulouse-Lautrec's ceramic portrait and so I decided to do a short course at Morley College in London to see how I fared with basic ceramic techniques. The course is held over two, three hour sessions. After the first session, I have constructed a vase, which is ready to be fired. I took photos as I worked to keep track of each stage in how to make a simple cylindrical vase.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Here are the three types of clay that we were offered. I opted for the one on the left, which apparently has a dark speckled effect when fired. The middle clay had a high proportion of sand in it, giving it a gritty texture and the lightest grey clay is the most refined.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">First you knead the clay and then you roll it out. Believe me, it is good for your arm muscles!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I used an old bath mat to make the pattern to be used for the decoration on the vase. It gives a surprisingly intricate effect.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Then I had to trim the clay.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I wrapped it around a cardboard tube, covered in newspaper, which makes it easier to extract once the cylindrical shape is retained by the clay.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Once the clay was trimmed and joined together, I added a base and shaped it to add extra interest.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My final addition was a little sculpted bunny and I then covered the dark clay in white 'slip', which will make the colour glaze stand out better when it is fired for a second time next week.</span><br />

I was really lucky. My friend had a spare ticket and so even though I failed in my initial attempts to get a ticket (I think they sold out in 40 seconds originally!), I managed to see the legends of comedy that are Monty Python. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Raleway', sans-serif;"><br />
They performed all of the famous sketches. </span><br />

<span style="color: #a64d79; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><i>I am pleased to announce that Jewellery Designs by Sarah Birt now has a little corner of the We Make London Designers Boutique in Camden!</i></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The address is: </span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 24px;"><span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">53 Camden Lock Place</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 24px;"><span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">West Yard</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 24px;"><span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">London</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 24px;"><span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">NW1 8AF</span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I have taken some photos of the approach to the shop to try to make it easy to find although if you follow the signs for West Yard Street Food and look out for the sky blue window frames and door, you should find it quite easily.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">How to find the We Make London Boutique:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">First, exit Camden Town tube station and follow the crowds towards the famous Camden Lock painted bridge.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH1pLdSobFr-TiiIIN3IUInMMkEkkgqrGi5cFETqDKsDpNMqEM43JOCH1nfKvfLn8rqFPaCWVEyUnQ6_TzpGlMilmH3hdn47miJLCxrHGMr6y_eeFKg2uP6tjxGgxqrt8pqDRLRaOANt2a/s1600/SAM_9523.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH1pLdSobFr-TiiIIN3IUInMMkEkkgqrGi5cFETqDKsDpNMqEM43JOCH1nfKvfLn8rqFPaCWVEyUnQ6_TzpGlMilmH3hdn47miJLCxrHGMr6y_eeFKg2uP6tjxGgxqrt8pqDRLRaOANt2a/s1600/SAM_9523.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Then walk past the orange juice stall and the Irregular Choice shoe shop, turn left into the market and look for the arrows pointing for West Yard Street Food.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5kTGfzVlRDs-JD5-ySWzGqtUHfAZWQJ2n5OntrTgVZqUyH2yuHleH2dW5BRJds35TrHr6Mimzpekz0Fd2eiGnCghCaJ4YiWHEG2WDnVxghOJY6y82aCYn8u5U9WPCkZ4OxnG_BefgTvGq/s1600/SAM_9532.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5kTGfzVlRDs-JD5-ySWzGqtUHfAZWQJ2n5OntrTgVZqUyH2yuHleH2dW5BRJds35TrHr6Mimzpekz0Fd2eiGnCghCaJ4YiWHEG2WDnVxghOJY6y82aCYn8u5U9WPCkZ4OxnG_BefgTvGq/s1600/SAM_9532.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Once you are in West Yard, you will see many food stalls and people sitting, enjoying the unique Camden market atmosphere. The boutique is number 53 so look out for bright blue window frames and card holders outside.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>

So far I am really enjoying it and am surprised that I haven't tried it before! I haven't really managed to animate anything on my own yet but I am saving up to buy <a href="http://www.dragonframe.com/" target="_blank">dragonframe</a> and a proper camera so that I can try to make my own film.</span><br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I have been watching a lot of stop motion films recently to try to work out what can be done and what I might like to attempt myself.</span><br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The Gravedigger's Tale, directed by Min Young Oh caught my eye. The gravedigger leads a solitary existence but her loneliness is soothed by a haunting melody that floats from the edge of the forest.She is serenaded by death and this is their story. The trailer is below:</span><br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">You can find out more about the production designer Olivia Muggleton's work <a href="http://oliviamuggleton.co.uk/the-gravedigger-s-daughter-2.html" target="_blank">here</a>. I think the use of light is exceptionally beautiful. The Museum of London has a fascinating <a href="http://www.museumoflondon.org.uk/london-wall/whats-on/exhibitions-displays/cheapside-hoard-londons-lost-jewels/">new exhibition</a>, which illuminates the discovery of a hoard of 16th and 17th century jewels and beautifully crafted pieces of jewellery. The hoard was found in the Cheapside area of London in the early twentieth century by builders and this is the first time that it has been displayed in its entirety since 1914. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My favourite piece by far is this salamander brooch, made from Colombian emeralds and table cut diamonds set in gold with white enamel detailing:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDlZCB5aB8n4MMllzMtMo3F5moar4K-QNinfT-j3U7UGaQEkCfRhkXTzw93QOBuMkmNQyCyYAlkmQv54hF86yMh2Dr0D3acu9TBpheshJ7gd-ht6z2sooHMfOsKLTMZ_QC2GREATfyWZi3/s1600/CheapsideHoarde15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDlZCB5aB8n4MMllzMtMo3F5moar4K-QNinfT-j3U7UGaQEkCfRhkXTzw93QOBuMkmNQyCyYAlkmQv54hF86yMh2Dr0D3acu9TBpheshJ7gd-ht6z2sooHMfOsKLTMZ_QC2GREATfyWZi3/s320/CheapsideHoarde15.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">I</span><span style="text-align: justify;">t always fascinates me how jewellery techniques have barely changed even since Roman times and the skill used in creating the jewellery in the Cheapside Hoard is evident. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFmHR6TFEaWDeofkM7rNaqgCXShGBITLPVQKIVqs77vX0yvvE8FoxPnBjiUCLna8SurGrvKr-A360bR3JV0y9qkALjQJRVwUS6ol3j96oGNYyNqc9TQj59l0wSGz7pFdyU_ANS1V2YnLFH/s1600/CheapsideHoarde16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFmHR6TFEaWDeofkM7rNaqgCXShGBITLPVQKIVqs77vX0yvvE8FoxPnBjiUCLna8SurGrvKr-A360bR3JV0y9qkALjQJRVwUS6ol3j96oGNYyNqc9TQj59l0wSGz7pFdyU_ANS1V2YnLFH/s320/CheapsideHoarde16.jpg" width="240" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">Another element of the hoard's allure relates to why it was never reclaimed after being buried. It is possible that the craftsperson responsible for this exquisite work went to fight in the English civil wars and unfortunately didn't survive. Or was the hoard stolen and the thief apprehended before he/she could fence their score?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiafRTh4u4YFmIKdzazLgzdPpUff7DLWG5U4I8GXoogrJ99YjJoWpSd5p0E2tvvhZQhFChFz4TIpj62olu3jcKnRvj-xpJ1ZmddDm4EXOZzJ0oSdpPydplXwavVczjupwCTFiakfRmcm0Qz/s1600/CheapsideHoarde8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiafRTh4u4YFmIKdzazLgzdPpUff7DLWG5U4I8GXoogrJ99YjJoWpSd5p0E2tvvhZQhFChFz4TIpj62olu3jcKnRvj-xpJ1ZmddDm4EXOZzJ0oSdpPydplXwavVczjupwCTFiakfRmcm0Qz/s320/CheapsideHoarde8.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Whatever the reason, the importance of this hoard is clear. It is a time capsule of styles and techniques from four hundred years ago and the exhibition is well worth visiting. Enjoy!</div>

I'm always amazed by how snow makes everything so very picturesque. It's certainly a nice excuse to try out my new camera!</div>
